Fairyland Parties!

Fairyland Parties

Imagination is the foundation upon which our society has been built!  A bold statement I know, but look at modern science.  Who would have thought it would be possible to perform keyhole surgery- build sky-scraping structures – drill wells as deep as Everest is high – put satellites into space – the list is endless, but the innovators who created these wonders had one thing in common – imagination!

As a mother of 3 children, I have become increasingly aware that the opportunities for kids to let their imaginations run riot have gradually eroded.  Combine that with a total lack of awareness of the natural world around them and we could be creating a whole generation of kids who can’t see beyond that which is already there. Years of creating wonderful themed parties for my own children, combined with my children’s stories and guided meditations, and a love of all things Fey, led to the creation of my alter-ego – the  Fairy Godmother and Fairyland Parties.

Fairies are amazing, with a representative for every occasion.  They offer me the perfect material to entertain and educate in the gentlest way! In my Magical Moving Fairy Stories I take children into the world of imagination, where they can be a magical creature (not just fairies though, we’ve had gnomes, pixies, pirates, trolls and trees too).  By creating a safe imaginary world I offer a basic structure which each individual child can expand to suit themselves. Imagine being able to move magically.  Some fly (the joy of watching 10 little girls flapping their wings is indescribable), some close their eyes and transport invisibly and others run at the speed of light! They interact with all the creatures around them, sometimes helping small creatures out with a problem or perhaps paddling or swimming with Mr Frog in a crystal clear magical pond!

We have the Garden Fairies who help to teach us about being aware of the natural wonders in our own environment. Ask a child whether that pretty winged creature which just flew by was a butterfly or a fairy and they start to explore possibilities in their own minds.  Have they noticed how many flowers look like fairies? Watch the face of a 4 year old when they realise that beetles have wings!  Then there are the Weather Fairies who treat the world like a giant adventure playground, floating on the breeze, riding in raindrops, bouncing on moss.... They all interact with the creatures who share their homes.  They gently introduce very basic environmental issues – Fairies hate litter, and love children who don’t drop rubbish. They love laughter, dancing and cake.

The wonderful thing about working with Fairies is that they make messages so memorable.  (My raindrop story was based around a story recounted to me by a lady in her early 60’s who remembered being told a story at bedtime by her Grandfather!)  Tell a child that breaking trees is not nice and they think nothing of it – tell them that it makes Fairies unhappy, and they remember.

I consider myself so lucky to have discovered a business which allows my imagination such free reign!  Having looked for props, I decided to create my own and now there are Fairy Godmother’s toadstool cushions in schools and houses up and down the country and the Orkney Faerie Museum! Fairy dust is something very special, and again I looked around but couldn’t find any which I felt was good enough for my fairies, so I created my own. Over 200 people are now in possession of small bottle of fairy magic!  I now offer a range of party bags which contain lovely things (including fairy dust!)

Fairyland Parties are suitable for children of all ages and include specially adapted traditional party games, Magical Moving Faerie stories, age appropriate crafts and silliness! Each party is different, depending on the audience and they are not just for girls!  I try to ensure that crafts are simple enough for children to make with the minimum of assistance so that they can decide for themselves how they want them to look (they often include vast quantities of glitter). If Mum or Dad really want to join in, they can make their own! Sometimes we use twigs from my magical Willow Tree to create wands or crowns – at other parties we might decorate tooth fairy boxes or other wonderful things.

The Fairy Godmother unfortunately doesn’t have wings, so I have to travel to parties by car, which means I can only attend parties within a 45minute to 1 hour radius of Amersham in Bucks.  The good news is that following the creation of a “distance party” for a trainee fairy in Wales, I shall shortly be launching my Party in a Box!  This will contain all the direction you need to organise your party and all you will need to add is your individual imagination! Watch out for other themes too.

Remember.... Magic is everywhere......if you know where to look!
